What are altered books? Altered books are an art form, often used as an art therapy tool, in which an old book is transformed through the use of various media and techniques to create a whole new book, often an artistic journal of some kind. I was introduced to the practice at a seminar on Art Therapy, and absolutely fell in love with it. It is a perfect method of finding uses for all those little bits of paper and other odd objects that we find and collect on a daily basis, that would otherwise be discarded as trash.

This altered book follows a sort of inspiring and motivational poem that I conjured- half little bits of life advice- that is woven throughout it's pages against the backdrop theme of- you guessed it! Butterflies... The subject matter was inspired by a desire to one day pass on life lessons to my four year old niece, while also remembering how when I was a kid, I was always fascinated by intricate things.
It should really be called, "Journey To Machu Picchu!" Because that's why I went! Living in Ecuador it seemed silly not to take advantage of being so close by to the rest of South America, so in August 2014, my roommate and I made our dreams a reality. I had always thought I would never be able to afford to see Machu Picchu, but speaking the language and knowing the culture in SA- helps ALOT. I was so inspired by everything I saw on my trip, and collected so many ticket stubs and photos that I had to memorialize it when I got home.
